Director of the Golfech nuclear power station for four years, Nicolas Brouzeng answered our questions, related in particular to the latest incidents. And the lessons to be learned …

Time is not resting at the Golfech Central. In the midst of a review inspection, the designated term for the Nuclear Authority's (ASN) capital visit to the site this week, Nicolas Brouzeng is not shy. He answered Tuesday night all our questions.

Is the last incident, last week (loss of water level – forgetting to close a valve) a first on the site?
I will answer you. But first, I want to clarify the context in which we are. Internally, we have clearly identified an erosion of our safety performance. We have therefore established an action plan to restore performance and improve our quality procedures. The incidents that you mentioned, there have always been, but we decided to be transparent and so we talk about them. I also want to say that they have no impact on the environment or the safety of our personnel or our facilities.

What happened last week?
Technically, you know everything. An emptying of the primary circuit of the production unit number 2 was started while a tap was closed. The agent behind this incident has been working at the plant for 20 years and is a very experienced technician. He is very touched by what happened …

Has he been sanctioned?
We debriefed with him. It is a work of awareness on a human error. He will not be punished. I am intractable about people who cheat or cheat, which is not his case. He was removed from production and himself proposed to become an ambassador on safety issues with his colleagues.

The procedures you want to review, what do they consist of?
Starting this summer, we asked our teams to review our procedures individually and collectively and write what they thought. The main idea is to remain able to anticipate the risks so as not to have to undergo them. All the 765 agents of the power plant, of the technician to myself, are concerned by this step. You have to know how to do more just, safer. We also discussed these issues with our providers. It is a collective awareness, a guided evaluation that has resulted in individual and collective commitments.

Are you satisfied with this work?
We must have every day an awareness of our responsibility, the culture of safety that is the essence of our trades. The work that is going on is being done around the fundamentals of our businesses. This is the right time to look into these issues before the Decennial 3 visit in 2022. We need to look at our organizations and our information systems, which we have started to do.

Some point the heavy loss of the old who left with their know-how and another idea of their mission?
The departure of the elders who participated in the opening of the site and had high expertise had an effect. Obviously, the expertise of young people is not the same. As in any other business, the relationship to work and commitment are different. But there is always a real attachment and a strong identity.

Does the outside have to fear your establishment?
We are transparent. Everything is known. We are a bit like the motorist who travels at 52 km / h instead of 50 km and turns around to report it to the gendarmes! It is not banal but it is our culture. And that will not change …
