(Agence Ecofin) – The French group Total has announced that it will deliver in February 2020, its first large LNG tanker to supply commercial vessels. The company is already planning to refuel the ships of the French shipping company CMA-CGM, for at least ten years, via the new vessel.

The ship was made by the Chinese manufacturer Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding. It is 135 m long, has a storage capacity of 18 600 m3 and above all is in line with the decision of the International Maritime Organization to significantly limit the sulfur content of marine fuels from 2020.

LNG-powered commercial vessels significantly reduce overall merchant marine emissions, with reductions in sulfur and fine particulate emissions of 99%, nitrogen oxide 85% and greenhouse gases about 20%.

For Momar Nguer, President of Total Marketing and Services, "The development of this type of vessel is essential to enable LNG to become a widely used marine fuel".
