The EU-Turkey deal signed in 2016 is hotly criticized by President Erdogan, but also by the Greek authorities, who have been overtaken by the influx of migrants into the Aegean islands.

For the first time since the 2016 agreement between Turkey and the European Union, Greece has become again this year the main gateway to Europe for migrants, with more than 10,000 arrivals on the islands last September. Riots, fires … The situation has become untenable in the "hotspots" – registration and reception centers of the Aegean islands. The EU-Turkey declaration provides for rejected asylum seekers arriving on these islands to be returned to Turkish territory. Critically criticized by Ankara and Athens, who are demanding more European aid, this pact was to be on the menu of the European summit of 17 and 18 October.

Greece passed on the Aegean Islands

Since this summer, the Greek authorities have seen a rise in the number of boats landing on the Aegean islands. Nearly 10,000 migrants arrived in September from the Turkish coast. About 70,000 are currently present in Greece, including about 24,000 in the hotspots of the Aegean islands, set up during the crisis
