If it has not yet integrated the official electrification plan of the brand, the new Peugeot 308 will be entitled to its trendy alternative. Expected next year, the new model should be available in a plug-in hybrid or 100% electric version …
100% electric for B-segment and plug-in hybrid vehicles for D and higher segments. If the technological choices of the lion brand are rather well framed on small and large models, there remained a soft spot for vehicles placed in the heart of the range. "Plug-in hybrid" or "full-electric", the brand has had to face a tough choice for the next generation of the 308, its compact segment C.
A Peugeot e-308 to counter the Volkswagen ID.3
If it opts for 100% electric, the manufacturer will probably not be content with the only configuration used on the current e-CMP platform whose 50 kWh battery will probably not meet the versatile use of the compact .
To meet the varied needs of users, the brand could go further by taking inspiration from what Volkswagen does with its ID.3. Expected next year, the replacement of the current Volkswagen e-Golf is offered with three types of batteries – 45, 58 or 77 kWh – for a range of 330 to 550 km.
The motorization could also be revised upwards. Continental branch in charge of supplying the electric motors of the PSA e-CMP platform, Vitesco already markets blocks up to 150 kW of power and 310 Nm, the equivalent of a 2.0 l diesel.
A 308 PHEV to attack the GTE
Second hypothesis and probably the most credible: that of the rechargeable hybrid. Here, the solution is probably simpler since the manufacturer will only have to draw on the technologies already used on the future 508 Plug-in hybrid. A transition all the easier as the new 308 will be designed on the same platform as the sedan: the famous EMP2 that serves as a basis for the group's rechargeable hybrid models.
On the 508, the configuration is based on a 180 horsepower petrol engine associated with an electric motor of 80 kW. This will add up to 225 horsepower and match the performance of this Peugeot 308 plug-in hybrid with that of the new Golf GTE. Expected in the next few months, the 8th generation of the German rechargeable hybrid compact should be declined in two power levels: 218 or 245 horsepower.
Battery side, we could find on board this future 308 PHEV the same pack 11.8 kWh as the 508. The latter authorizes some 50 kilometers of autonomy with a load.
Answer in 2020
100% electric or rechargeable hybrid … if the Peugeot representatives met during the tests of new e-208 confirmed to us to have validated the technological choice internally, the constructor still keeps the suspense until the presentation of the new model.
Expected in 2020, this new 308 should take up a large part of the aesthetic elements already released on the other models of the brand such as the famous triple-clawed light signature or the i-Cockpit device. A set of features to help unprecedented driving should also be part of.
And you ? Electric or hybrid … which version would you prefer? In the hypothesis of an electric 308, what will be its minimum autonomy to meet the uses?
