more than a year has passed since, after a broad parliamentary debate, the transfer of Francisco Franco's remains from the Valle de los Cados, near Madrid, to a tomb in a public cemetery in the capital was approved: 172 votes in favor, 2 against and 164 abstentions. The remains of the Caudillo – which until October 24 were in the monument built to commemorate the victims of the Civil War (1936 – 1939) – are thus transferred – by helicopter – to the cemetery El Pardo-Mingorrubio, where the widow of Franco, Carmen Polo. Franco's family would have preferred the remains to be transferred to the Cathedral of Almudena, in Madrid. The entire operation takes place in the presence of 22 descendants of the dictator, Justice Minister Dolores Delgado, a forensic expert and a priest. Family members, reports El Pais, they preferred to leave the remains in the original coffin despite the damages suffered over time (the dictator died in November 1975).

A private ceremony

The exhumation, far from the cameras, started at 10.30 am: the press remained outside the basilica. The government denied the request of relatives and nostalgics to wrap Franco's coffin in the Spanish flag (as on the first burial, ed). This is science fiction, clarified the socialist prime minister Pedro Snchez. As reported El Pais, the nostalgics of the Franco dictatorship have opposed the exhumation to the last, even sending the company Mrmoles y Granitos Hermanos Verdugo Jimnez S.L. – in charge of lifting the marble of the tomb – various telephone threats. Spain still remembers El Pais, took exactly 43 years, 11 months and two days to win a battle in support of the country's historical memory. The transaction cost 63 thousand euros. The priority was that the great monument of the Valley of the Fallen ceased to be a monument in which the victims had to share the space with their executioner.
