As we reported to you recently, Hard Rock Stadium and its surroundings could be used as a backdrop for this second race in the United States, and the record took a step forward with the signing of an agreement between the owners of the stadium and the F1.
According to the Miami Herald, which reports this information, Liberty Media has agreed with the Miami Dolphins football franchise, owner of the complex, for the event to be held as early as May 2021.
"We are delighted to announce that Formula 1 and Hard Rock Stadium have reached an agreement in principle to host the first-ever Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix at Hard Rock Stadium" said in a statement Tom Garfinkel, CEO of the Dolphins, and Sean Bratches, commercial director of F1.
"With an annual impact (on tourism) estimated at more than $ 400 million, and 35,000 occupied hotel rooms, the Miami Grand Prix will be an economic behemoth for South Florida every year."
Garfinkel showed his enthusiasm for the project: "We are grateful to our fans, elected officials and the local tourism industry for their patience and support throughout this process, and we look forward to bringing the world's largest motor racing event to one of the most more iconic and glamorous. "
But this agreement does not mean that the case is heard, since an agreement had already been found to establish an urban circuit on the seafront, before the residents put pressure to cancel it.
This transfer to the north of the city, and specifically the Miami-Dade County, would allow the establishment of a circuit of 18 turns whose layout had been presented earlier this month, as we reported.
Unfortunately for the event, Miami Gardens District Director Barbara Jordan, whose jurisdiction includes Hard Rock Stadium, has declared herself against holding the GP. His possible future replacement, the current mayor of Miami Gardens, Oliver Gilbert, took the same position.
In fact, Jordan proposed the vote of a commission even before the F1 could have the agreement of the county to close the geographical area concerned during the weekend of race.
And this is not the only obstacle facing the race, which has to cope with pressure from local residents, the same pressure that prevented the race on the waterfront and canceled the Formula E race in the city.
As in other projects, local residents and their powerful associations complain about traffic, noise and pollution. The organizers are trying to make them listen to reason by recalling that the Grand Prix would offer a spotlight on the neighborhood and the city for a very short-lived inconvenience.
The argument that could convince the authorities, however, will clearly be that of finance, since they want to present a plan that would prove to the tourism industry that such a show would have a spin-off equivalent to the Super Bowl, the famous final of the NFL season.
One of them confirmed that the people in charge of tourism in the city of Florida would be delighted to see a show of strength like the urban races of Monaco, Singapore or Baku.
"We love and support this Formula 1 project" said Wendy Kallergis, president and director of Greater Miami and the Beaches Hotel Association. "I can tell you that all the hotels in Miami-Dade County, our employees and our managers, are very excited about this idea."
On the side of Liberty Media, Sean Bratches has already advanced his pawns with local associations and tourism officials of the city, recalling that the event would have a minor impact.
"Hosting the race on the stadium site limits the work that needs to be done on the public streets, which means there will be little disruption to local residents and businesses during race preparation. "
