FCA Group – A battery factory will be established in Mirafiori

The group Fiat Chrysler takes another step in the electrification strategy. In Mirafiori, where in July the works for the construction of the assembly line of the started 500 electric, an assembly center for plug-in vehicle batteries will be built. The project, which will lead to the creation of a plant called "Battery Hub", will start in the first part of 2020 and will involve, in the first phase, initial investments for about 50 million euros.

Gorlier: new thrust for the electric. "The car industry – commented Pietro Gorlier, manager of the EMEA area of ​​the Italian-American group – is profoundly changing and one of the main trends of change is linked to electrification. Thanks to the construction of the new assembly center of batteries at Mirafiori, FCA accelerates and adds a new piece to the ecosystem that starts from the supply chain to get to customer support. Today's announcement is added to the numerous partnerships recently signed on the front of thecharging infrastructure, of the services of vehicle-to-grid and those for the customers of hybrid and full electric cars, from Italy to the rest of the world ”.

The partnership with Comau. The battery assembly center will be built in partnership with the industrial automation company Comau, it can be expanded to include other projects and will feature cutting-edge technologies with modular, flexible processes and collaborative robots. It also includes an area for training activities, a pilot process for the prototyping and testing phases and a technologically advanced center for electronic tests for quality control of the most important components and the batteries produced.

The strategies of Fca for Turin. The new investment announced by Fiat Chrysler for the Mirafiori and Grugliasco pole, where about 20 thousand people work in the various company activities (production, engineering, design, sales, financial services and spare parts), is part of the plan investments for 2019-2021 destined to renew the range with 13 new or updated models and, above all, to start the electrification of the commercial offer (12 electric versions of new or existing models are planned). In this context, the localization of the electric 500 at Mirafiori falls: it will be produced starting from the second quarter of 2020 thanks to an investment by 700 million euros which will lead to the use of around 1,200 people on an assembly line with an initial capacity of 80,000 units per year. A few weeks ago the group also announced arrival at the Turin hub of the new GranTurismo and GranCabrio, the first Maserati models to adopt 100% electric solutions.
