"The threats posed by states or operators they support are considered of utmost importance," says the report, saying they "may have the motivation, intent, and most importantly, the ability to lead repeated and sophisticated attacks on the security of 5G networks ". There was no explicit reference to Chinese telecom equipment manufacturer Huawei, indirectly concerned by this finding.
Another European report will follow, pointing out names
EU Security Commissioner Julian King has publicly stated that this evaluation report would be followed later by another document that would probably name names. "The problems are very clearly stated in the report," he simply commented.
Number two global smartphone behind the Korean Samsung, Huawei is regarded as the leader in 5G technology. The US has banned it from the US telecom market by accusing it of spying on behalf of Beijing and asking their Western allies to do the same, while Moscow rolls out the red carpet to the Chinese equipment maker by signing an agreement to develop 5G mobile networks in Russia.
The global battle for 5G carrier networks is being played between Huawei and two European telecom equipment manufacturers, Swedish Ericsson and Finnish Nokia, which bought the French-American Alcatel-Lucent in 2015.
