Euro 2020 – Qualifications

This Monday night, France welcomes Turkey at the Stade de France in the hope of validating its ticket for Euro 2020 if successful. But after a narrow victory Friday in Iceland (1-0), some questions arise. This is how FF wants Didier Deschamps and his family to respond.

The final sprint for the qualification to Euro 2020 is well and truly launched. And the Blues could cross the finish line with the leading pack on Monday night, along with all the first teams to qualify officially for the finals of this summer. But for that, we must defeat Turkey, this Monday in Saint-Denis, and take a revenge on the last team to have dropped the world champions, last June in Konya (2-0). In addition to washing the affront of the first leg, it will also present to the supporters of the Stade de France a face more pleasant than the trip to Reykjavik, unappealing.

The return of (true) 4-2-3-1

And if the men of Didier Deschamps cruelly lacked offensive inspiration on Icelandic soil, Friday is largely because the Basque tactician chose to return to his 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 (sometimes qualified, wrongly, 4-2-3-1, depending on the position of Blaise Matuidi). With three midfielders (Tolisso, Sissoko and Matuidi placed in the middle midfield), the French have sorely lacked speed, percussion and offensive creativity. Only Kingsley Coman was able to create gaps with a northern formation yet very ambitious, while Antoine Griezmann shone without being able to do everything. However, before this match, the coach had abandoned his magic formula to line up, in the last three outings of his team (against Albania and Andorra), a real 4-2-3-1 with four offensive players in front of two recuperators. Result: three wins, eleven goals scored and a single goal conceded. The last time the 4-4-2 World Cup was aligned was … during the defeat of the Blues in Turkey last June. The legendary pragmatism of Deschamps would therefore make him not make the same mistake twice.

A strong Mandanda

It was one of the expectations of this international truce: to see a Steve Mandanda back in the French goals, with real responsibilities. The injury of Hugo Lloris, just before joining Clairefontaine, had propelled the porter of Olympique Marseille at the top of the tricolor hierarchy. The opportunity for him to prove to his coach that he can always count on him. But above all, the high-level performances he plays every week in Ligue 1 with his club can also be used by the French team. This Friday in Iceland, it was hardly requested, as the attacks of the locals were rare and dangerous. This Monday night in Saint-Denis, it will probably be another story. Against Turks who play their qualification too, it will have to be mentally strong for the goalkeeper to keep his cage clean, and thus demonstrate that it remains a luxury joker.

A worthy man always so powerful

Among the few positive points of this trip to Iceland, there is the performance of Lucas Digne. Titularized on the left of the defense due to the physical condition of Lucas Hernandez, not yet postponed, the side of Everton probably gave full satisfaction to his coach, so much he weighed by his innumerable climbs, which often ended with centers – 4 key passes to his credit. With a Matuidi placed in front of him on the left side, but which often returned to the axis, he had the space to do what he does best: play like a winger and bring the overdriven attack. The icing on the cake, it has even been solid defensively, which is often considered his weak point. He was just one of the best players on the pitch in this sad match. This Monday against Turkey, he will surely have to be more careful in his round trips, because the opposition will probably be more dangerous. It's up to him to show that he has really progressed defensively and that he has steadily won his place among the Blues.

No Sissoko in the axis

No doubt, Moussa Sissoko has a versatility that other French backgrounds, much more technical than him, do not have. An intensity of every moment, combativeness, the volume of play, a physical power: all qualities appreciated by Didier Deschamps. But as evidenced by his performance in Iceland, Sissoko is not made to play in the heart of the French midfielder. A post, especially in front of a low block, which requires a certain vista and an infallible address in order to be able, by the pass, to direct the game and to be the launching pad of the attacks. The technical quality, the major characteristic of players like Corentin Tolisso or Tanguy Ndombele. Monday night at the Stade de France, it will be tough in the middle, but it will win, so scoring goals. Nevertheless, it is likely that the coach tricolor tenularizes again three media recovery. Let's just hope that Matuidi or Ndombele are preferred to Sissoko in the heart of the game, leaving the old Toulouse on one side. – J.C.
