Bay Area favorites like Humphry Slocombe and Nation’s Giant Hamburgers are among the businesses inside
DoorDash has just unveiled its latest business venture: a new brick-and-mortar location in the Peninsula.
The food delivery giant opened its first commissary kitchen Monday, dubbed DoorDash Kitchens, in Redwood City. Inside, customers will find these Bay Area favorites: Nation’s Giant Hamburgers, Humphry Slocombe, Rooster & Rice, and The Halal Guys.
“I think it’s been great so far working with other like-minded restaurateurs who share the same passion for their food and customers,” said Patrick Mock, franchise owner of The Halal Guys. “We all share a love for the Bay Area and want to make sure that we’re fully accessible to all our customers.”
The structure is set up similarly to San Francisco’s Bespoke communal workspace at Westfield Mall, says Fuad Hannon, head of new business verticals at DoorDash. As with any restaurant featured on DoorDash, customers will need to order meals from the app.
But one unique feature available to customers is that they can also order goods from another business inside. That means if you’re craving a juicy burger from Nation’s Giant Hamburgers but also want a scoop of ice cream from Humphry Slocombe, DoorDash will deliver both to your door in one trip.
DoorDash Kitchens won’t work like your typical brick and mortar. Each business inside will only offer to-go meals from their full menus. Additionally, all workers inside the facility will be staffed by DoorDash.
“These locations are purely for delivery and pickup customers and since they are staffed with a DoorDash host, [it] will have more of a concierge type vibe,” Mock said. “Aside from that front of house difference, our back of house operation remains unchanged. We’ll still be prepping, cooking, and assembling quality Halal Guys platters the way our customers have come to know and love all these years.”
DoorDash will also focus on the infrastructure, maintenance, marketing and delivery for each business.
Hannon says that DoorDash selected and reached out to each business inside the building based on a high demand for their brands to serve those areas. When asked if DoorDash might expand to other Bay Area cities, Hannon says they’re open to it.
“We think there are interesting possibilities for future innovations, but we will test and learn with this first kitchen before further expanding to ensure it works best for our merchant partners.”
One caveat to the new building is that not every Peninsula resident will benefit from the delivery services. DoorDash Kitchens will serve 13 cities, but customers who live in Burlingame, Foster City, Los Altos, Mountain View, San Mateo or Sunnyvale will need to make the drive to Redwood City to pick up their meals.
The new facility will serve the following 13 Bay Area cities:
- Atherton
- Belmont
- Burlingame
- Foster City
- Los Altos
- Menlo Park
- Mountain View
- Palo Alto
- Redwood City
- San Carlos
- San Mateo
- Sunnyvale
- Woodside
DoorDash Kitchens is located at 1531 Main St., which formerly housed a healthy meal delivery service called Farm Hill but has since closed. Just one street away from bustling El Camino Real, the structure resides on a quiet part of the city with nearby businesses McDonald’s, Harry Hofbrau, and Panaderia & Restaurante Guatemalteca.
