The slow-motion episode in Juventus-Bologna happens in full recovery with the Bianconeri leading by 2-1. The protagonist of the action discussed is Matthijs de Ligt for a touch of arm that actually stops the ball and dampens its trajectory in the penalty area, preventing the rossoblu player from receiving the ball just a few steps from Buffon. The Emilian call for a penalty kick, the former Ajax shakes his head and excuses himself, Ronaldo signals to Irrati that the movement is involuntary. A few minutes pass, the time for the race director to have a meeting with the Var assistants and then have the game continue regularly.

Because the referee did not give Bologna a penalty for the touch of de Ligt's arm

The most plausible reason is that the race director, assisted by the assistants to the Var, considered it involuntary and above all congruous with the movement of the body that of the arm of the player who has impacted the ball in the penalty area after having unscrewed it with his foot. It all happens in the hottest phase of the match, when Bologna is leaning towards the search for a draw and at the end of the match there are only a few minutes left in the recovery. Juventus has the victory in hand but between the 91st and 92nd trembles: the rossoblus reach the bottom, there is a cross from the right hand side by Skov Olsen on which the former Ajax defender, de Ligt, tries to intervene to remove the ball. The ball bounces in front of it and picks up speed, the Dutchman is out of time and cannot stop the movement: it happens so that it is diverted first by a foot and then by carom on the elbow. A doubtful episode that the referee and Var resolve by opting for involuntariness.

What does the regulation say? According to the new rules, those relating to the touch of hand / arm in a slip, the de Ligt case seems to correspond to the hypothesis number three compared to those contemplated by the provisions: 1) if it touches the ball with the arm in support, and this is attached to the body, it is not a phallus; 2) if the supporting arm is far from the body, however, it is foul; 3) if it touches with the other arm, and this is far from the body, it is foul. In the specific episode to save the Dutchman it was to have the ball swung with his left foot, which in the overall evaluation meant that this clumsy intervention was not considered an infringement ("unless the player intentionally plays the ball which then touches his hands-arms", as indicated by the regulation).

Pjanic's drive to double Juventus

There is still another episode that raised Bologna's protests. It happens on the occasion of the advantage of Juventus scored by Pjanic. This time the protests of Emilian players refer to an alleged push by the Bosnian against an opponent during the action that will then bring Pjanic himself to the serve and goal from inside the penalty area. For Irrati the action is not vitiated by any foul and therefore his evaluation of the contact effectively excludes the Var. There is still another detail to consider: after the disputed push the Bologna returns in possession of the ball and plays it by resetting it by made the phase of possession in attack on which instead the Var could intervene.
