Audi continues at full speed in the electrification process of its range and launches the plug-in hybrid variant of its flagship A8. The new electrified model, available from the first quarter of 2020, makes its debut in the L configuration, ie the long wheelbase version (overall length of 5.30 meters), which will be followed later by the standard wheelbase version.
The A8 L 60 Tfsi and Quattro is the fourth model of the Phev family of the Ingolstadt company and joins the A7 Sportback 55 Tfsi and Quattro sedans and the Q5 50 Tfsi and Quattro and Q5 55 Tfsi and Quattro SUVs with which it shares the principle of operation, electrification systems and remote management via the myAudi smartphone app.
The four-ring limousine is equipped with the generous V6 3.0 Tfsi engine, turbo with direct petrol injection with particulate filter, 340 hp and 500 Nm of torque, while the electric drive comes from a synchronous permanent magnet thruster of 136 Cv and 350 Nm of torque integrated, together with the separation clutch, in the eight-speed Tiptronic transmission with torque converter.
“The power electronics – the technicians explain – transform the direct current supplied by the high voltage battery into alternating current intended for the electric motor supply.
In recovery phases, this engine acts as a generator, accumulating energy in the lithium ion battery. The latter is located under the boot floor, consisting of 104 pouch cells organized in eight modules and characterized by a capacity of 14.1 kWh and a rated voltage of 385 volts.
The battery cooling system is integrated in the air conditioning circuit and also manages the temperature of the electric motor and power electronics ”.
Overall, the car therefore has a system power of 449 hp with a torque of 700 Nm already available at 1,250 rpm. and can thus shoot from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.9 seconds to reach a maximum self-limited speed of 250 km / h (135 km / h in electric-only mode), while the range with exclusively electric propulsion reaches 46 km (Wltp).
Aesthetically the new A8 L 60 Tfsi and Quattro is characterized by the luminous signature freely inspired by the completely electric e-tron model. At the ends of the front air intakes there are five horizontal segments of daytime running lights, chrome details to embellish the door handles and the extractor, while a full-width chrome strip distinguishes the rear area.
The flagship plug-in also includes as standard 19-inch alloy wheels with 5-spoke turbine design subjected to an aerodynamic optimization process.
Furthermore, there are over thirty driver assistance systems available to customers, mainly organized in the Tour and City packages, and at the top of the range are the Matrix Hd LED headlights with laser light and Oled rear lights. (M.R.)
