WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States Supreme Court on Friday seized a controversial law limiting the right to abortion in the state of Louisiana, paving the way for a possible challenge to the right to abortion. 'Abortion.

Adopted in 2014 but blocked by the courts, this law aims to require doctors performing voluntary abortions at designated centers to have their patients admitted to a hospital within 30 miles (48 km) the place of the operation.

Republican Jeff Landry, the Attorney General of Louisiana, said in a statement that the law was needed to ensure women's safety and hospitalize quickly if the intervention goes bad.

But according to the Hope Medical Group for Women, an abortion center in Shreveport, it is good to limit the right to abortion: the application of this law would result in the closure of two of the three Louisiana clinics practicing abortion.

"I hope the Supreme Court will see what this law really represents: an unconstitutional charge on our fundamental rights," said Kathaleen Pittman, who heads Shreveport's Hope Clinic.

The Supreme Court, which resumes Monday, is expected to deliver its opinion by the end of June.

In 2016, it struck down a similar law adopted in Texas as unconstitutional. Conservative Justice Anthony Kennedy then added his voice to the four Liberal judges of the Court.

But Kennedy retired in 2018 and Donald Trump replaced him with Brett Kavanaugh, an appointment that leans the Supreme Court a little to the right.

For anti-abortion activists, who are stepping up initiatives across the United States, the goal is for the Supreme Court to reverse its historic 1973 decision in Roe v. Wade who legalized the right to abortion all over the country.

During its successful 2016 campaign, Trump promised to appoint judges to the Supreme Court, if any, ready to overturn the 1973 decision.

Nine judges appointed for life compose the Supreme Court. As it stands, five magistrates rank in the conservative camp, the other four in the liberal camp.
