Improbable. It was only through an error message that the pilots were able to interrupt the take-off procedure of their Boeing 737 carrying 150 passengers. Which had been sabotaged by a mechanic who intended to denounce a blockage between the management and unions of American Airlines.
He wanted "Only" delay or cancel the flight in order to be able to work overtime. Abdul-Majeed Marouf Ahmed Alani, a mechanic from American Airlines, was arrested on Thursday, September 5, 2019, at the Miami airport in the United States, reports New York Times. Reason: sabotage of a Boeing 737-800 from the airline.
A device whose pilots were able to stop the takeoff procedure in extremis, just before putting the gas, thanks to an error message. The 150 passengers escaped him beautifully.
A piece of foam in front of the sensors
The facts go back to July 17th. The surveillance cameras show a man approaching the aircraft to fly 2834 from Miami to Nassau, Bahamas. It can be seen accessing the compartment, located under the cockpit and in front of the landing gear, which houses the essential data module of the aircraft (angle of climb or descent of the aircraft, speed …).
Investigators determined that the locomotive engineer would have obstructed some sensors with a piece of foam and loosened the Pitot probe that is used to determine the speed of the aircraft.
"His intention was not to cause damage to the aircraft or its passengers", said the investigators after questioning the man. adding: "Alani told the police that he was upset by the disagreement over the contract between the unionized workers and American Airlines and that the conflict had affected him financially. "
This will not change the penalty he incurs: up to 20 years in prison if he is convicted.
