Naruhito, the new emperor of Japan, will use a unique car for the ceremony of his official coronation on Sunday, September 22, which will proclaim him as the 126th emperor of the country of the rising sun and will adopt the name of Reiwa, whose two 'Kanji' – or pictograms, if you prefer – could be translated as "order and harmony." It is a Toyota Century transformed to cabrio.

Although the acts of transition of power began on May 1, it will be this Sunday when the official ceremony is held, with the presence of dignitaries from around the world, in the Akasaka Palace – State Guest House.

For the occasion, Toyota has developed a unique and exclusive version of its luxury saloon Century By converting it into a cabrio. A transformation carried out within the brand, by hand and exclusively for this occasion and that has required six weeks of work. It has seven layers of paint that have been sanded by hand three times. And, of course, the imperial emblems in gold that occupy the place normally reserved for registration.

The current Century generation is the third of that name. The first was launched in 1967 to celebrate the birthday of Sakichi Toyoda. The current generation was presented at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show and launched in 2018; It is possibly the most luxurious sedan ever manufactured in Japan, where it costs more than 160,000 euros. It has many origin components Lexus, among them the platform and the engine a 5-liter V8 hybrid, with 425 horsepower, instead of the original V12.

The car has a curious detail. The rear seats are in a slightly higher position – 4 centimeters – so that the emperor is easily visible. It also has fixed backrest inclined 25 degrees.

This Toyota will be the first new car of the royal family. The previous one, a Rolls-Royce Corniche II, dates from 1990, that is to say practically 30 years ago.

Its use will surely be very short. In addition to the coronation ceremony, they may also use it in the inauguration of the Olympic Games. Tokyo 2020. But not much more because the emperor leaves little palace, at least in public ceremony. Rolls-Royce's previous one was only used twice.

The route that Emperor Reiwa will make will be very short. From the Imperial Palace to the Akasaka Palace, the route is barely 4 kilometers long and has been chosen to cause the least possible traffic problems. Despite this, it will take at least half an hour to travel this distance. The driver will maintain the minimum possible speed so that all Japanese who have moved to see the imperial caravan can see the emperor perfectly.
