The suspect, a 33-year-old Afghan, was arrested Sunday shortly after the incident.
This man is suspected of attacking several people on Saturday around 16:25, near the Laurent-Bonnevay bus station, in Villeurbanne, in the suburbs of Lyon, where there is also a metro station. The assailant was armed with a 9 cm knife and a barbecue pin. He used these items to stab several people waiting for the bus, killing a 19-year-old man and injuring eight others.
The investigation focuses on the suspect's personality and his background. A search conducted Saturday at his home – a shelter for refugees Vaulx-en-Velin – did not allow to "appear any radicalization", according to the Lyon prosecutor. A first psychiatric evaluation carried out during the police custody revealed "an invading psychotic state with paranoid delusions with multiple themes including those of mysticism and religion", again detailed the prosecutor.
