Between January and the first three weeks of August, 72,497 sources of fire were recorded, the largest number for the period in the last seven years. Fire is normally used by settlers and ranchers to clean the land after deforestation and thus use it for livestock.
Climate change activists took advantage of the fact that the company of the richest man in the world owes its name to the Amazon rainforest to make a video that presents an opportunity to "leave a legacy." The employer has not yet referred publicly to fires.
"He has a strong brand, Jeff, but what does he want his legacy to be?" The video asks, and continues: "Now he has the opportunity to return him to the jungle that gave him the name of his signature and much more."
Following this video, thousands of tweeters, under the hashtag #ActForTheAmazon went to Bezos to ask him to destine his fortune to protect the jungle.
According to the American advertising weekly Adweek, it is not known with certainty who are the people behind the viral video but it is believed that it was made by a team of advertising creatives to raise awareness about the effects of climate change.
Adweek spoke with one of the creatives behind the message, who did not reveal his identity. He said they do not expect the employer to respond to the request and that it is a way that "everyone has the tools and other ways to talk about power and control."
