Kuwait (AFP) – The emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, 90, has been admitted for "medical examinations" in a hospital in the United States, resulting in the postponement of a meeting with President Donald Trump, said Sunday the official agency Kuna.

Last August, Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who was on a visit to Kuwait, expressed his wish for a "speedy recovery" from the Emir on Twitter, despite the fact that no information had been given before about the possible deterioration of his condition. health.

The Kuwaiti news agency Kuna then immediately claimed that Sheikh Sabah "had recovered and was now in good health", without providing any other details.

On Sunday, the agency just said that the emir had been admitted for "medical exams" in a hospital in the United States, without saying which and without specifying a date.

"His admission has resulted in the postponement of his summit with Mr. Trump at a date to be announced later," she added. The emir had visited the United States last Monday and his meeting with the American president was initially scheduled for 12 September.

The last public appearance of the emir dates back to early August when he participated in the prayer marking Eid al-Adha, the great Muslim holiday. He seemed fit.

Sheikh Sabah succeeded his brother, the late Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, in January 2006.
