The recent victory that Alex Rins achieved at Silverstone implies a series of connotations beyond the sight of that last maneuver with which Suzuki advanced Marc Márquez over the same finish line.
Initially, this result allowed the Barcelona to overcome Danilo Petrucci in the general table, which now includes the third, 23 points from Andrea Dovizioso. Apart from Márquez, Rins is with Dovi the only one who has been able to accumulate two wins. As much as the chances of fighting for the title are mathematically possible, but theoretically remote, the season that the Spanish has carried out so far leads us to think that the Hamamatsu team is approaching that point where its next objective is not It may be other than the title.
At the end of 2018, the company established its career division, a decision taken from an administrative and organizational point of view, but that undoubtedly reinforces the commitment to the project in MotoGP.
The last time Suzuki won more than one grand prize in the same course was in 2000, the year that Kenny Roberts Jr. his only World Cup was awarded and the last of the five listed in the showcases of the brand of the great S, which had previously been covered with glory with Barry Sheene (1976 and 1977), Marco Lucchinelli (1981), Franco Uncini (1982) and with Kevin Schwantz (1993).
What happens is that the current situation in the championship has nothing to do with what was then. Winning four dates (Motegi, Montmeló, Jerez and Sepang) was enough for Roberts to take the jackpot in an exercise in which more races were held in water than with dry asphalt. Mick Doohan had just retired, Valentino Rossi faced his debut in 500 cc and the physical problems that ultimately motivated the withdrawal of Alex Crivillé They began to condition the recent champion.
“That World Cup of the year 2000 had nothing to do with it now. That Kenny motorcycle was a motorcycle that drove very well in water and he was a specialist in those conditions, ”Crivillé tells Motorsport.com. “But now, the situation is quite different, because I think Suzuki has the most balanced motorcycle on the grid. The problem is not that he competes against another motorcycle, but that he does it against Marquez. "
"I have seen some problems with the Honda lately, it is a very nervous prototype. And that happens because we are seeing Marc suffer in some tracks, despite being the best driver of all," adds the first Spanish in crowning in the queen class (1999).
After that crush on Roberts and until Rins' victories in Texas and Britain, Suzuki had only been able to climb the top step of the podium three times: Sete Gibernau, in Valencia (2001), Chris Vermeulen, in Le Mans (2007) and Maverick Viñales, in Silverstone (2016), a year and a half after the builder's return to the championship after having abandoned him for economic reasons in 2012.
Who speaks now is Kevin Schwantz, world champion with blue motorcycles in 1993. “Suzuki has always been able to make the most of his resources. Let's say that its efficiency is superior to that of the rest, although sometimes that causes processes to take a little longer, ”explains the American to Motorsport.com.
"I remember that, in my time, when we asked for a new piece, it could take four races to bring it to us, while Honda was ready the following week," the Texan adds. “The satellite equipment may only be missing in order to make that definitive leap, but for that to work, Suzuki has to be able to control it well and take advantage of it. I have no doubt that when I decide to organize it, it will bring very positive things. ”
In that sense, it is worth mentioning the benefits that the consolidation of the training of the test structure has on development issues, with Sylvain Guintoli as a tester
Suzuki's philosophy has nothing to do with those of Yamaha and Honda, the other two Japanese manufacturers present at the event, nor with Ducati's. Neither in terms of investment, nor in the operational field, nor in the management of the pilots. Hence the strategy of Davide Brivio, his team manager, is based on the hiring of young talents as in his day Viñales, Rins and Mir, and then make them grow.
The salary of Barcelona can be perfectly four times lower than that of Márquez in HRC, always based on variables by results. Now, Brivio must scratch his pocket a little more if he wants to retain # 42 beyond 2020, and cross his fingers so that the competition does not pose a more attractive scenario. The main trick of Suzuki to retain his spearhead is the very high level of competitiveness exhibited by the GSX–RR and the queue of runners knocking on the door to get on it.
“I think we have everything to fight for the title with Alex. He has won two races, just like Dovizioso. If he had not fallen in Assen and Sachsenring, where he was shooting ahead, he would now be second in the standings. Our bet is Rins, while we want Joan (Mir) to continue growing. It is not through our heads to go to sign a pilot outside, ”says Brivio in a telephone conversation with Motorsport.com.
“We try to be creative to fight with our adversaries. We have a great team of engineers in Japan, who are very efficient and have been able to make a motorcycle that I think is very balanced. To the four-cylinder in-line engine we must add a very special chassis that offers very interesting features, ”continues the Italian, who no longer knows what to say when asked about the possibility that Suzuki dispose of that expected satellite equipment in 2021. “That would do us very well to accelerate the motorcycle development process. I am optimistic in that regard. ”
The executive’s claims leave no room for doubt: unlike what Honda can do, Yamaha or Ducati, he will not materialize a sound signing such as the one that once made the Bolognese brand when hiring Jorge Lorenzo, or the one who can do who intends to start Marquez from Honda. In fact, the salary level policy has varied greatly since the signing of the red bikes broke the deck in 2017 to take # 99, to whom he paid 25 million euros for two years. Since last summer he let the Mallorcan escape, the offices of Borgo Panigale They have been picking up rope: Dovizioso's record is around six million euros and Danilo Petrucci renewed a few months ago for less than 700,000 euros.
