The vast majority of ADAS systems cameras are mounted on the windshield, always in a similar location: in the upper central part, at the height of the interior rearview mirror. From there they have a high and clear view, as they are within the sweeping area of ​​the windshield wipers.

In the panoramic windshields, which extend towards the roof as is the case of the Model X, the ADAS systems cameras could be installed much higher to further clear the driver's vision. But there is a problem: the windshield wipers do not get to clean that area, so the cameras cannot be mounted there. Conventional systems are also not effective on very curved windshields.

In the patent of the new Tesla system it is explained that “in certain situations, a driver or cameras on board a vehicle (for example, assisted and autonomous driving) require a field of vision free of what lies ahead of the vehicle . Conventional windshield wiper systems, with several windshield wiper blades, generally have a poorly refined design and do not clean the entire windshield, which can hamper the field of vision. ”

It is also reported that electric motors include many mechanical components that create a friction that requires a lot of battery power; they are susceptible to oxidation and wear, especially true in geographic areas subject to adverse weather conditions; and have a variable influence on aerodynamics, changing the air flow vector.

The new Tesla system is based on an electromagnetic mechanism, in which the wiper arm slides transversely along the entire windshield along rails. This mechanism is hidden under the hood when it is not in operation. In this way, you can cover the entire surface of the windshield and install the cameras of the ADAS systems above. In addition, friction is significantly reduced and aerodynamics is improved, which affects consumption; and many mechanisms susceptible to corrosion are eliminated over time.
