Stage 14: San Vicente de la Barquera – Oviedo (189 km) live on 07/09/2019

First 50 kilometers completed, the escapes, are just over two minutes from the platoon.

The group heads to San Roque de Acebal which is the next place of passage. In this Tour there is only one Asturian runner, Dani Navarro who this morning commented on how exciting it is for him to run at home. He was not born there, he did it in Salamanca, but he grew up in Gijón.

There is a great desire for an arrival to the sprint today and the development of the test is being noticed. Now the advantage of the escapes is lowered that returns to be located below the two minutes.

Good race pace in the first hour of competition. Four teams are now pulling the platoon: UAE Team Emirates, Mitchelton-Scott, Trek-Segafredo and Jumbo-Visma.

The escapes are a little more distant but, as we said, their income is increasing very slowly, just under two and a half minutes.

The runners are about to go through Unquera. From here they leave Cantabria and enter Asturias.

The advantage of escaping increases somewhat but it rises at a very slow pace because the platoon does not want to let them separate too much, below two minutes.

Deceunink works at the head of the platoon for his sprinter Fabio Jakobsen and so does Bora for Sam Bennett.

And it seems that the escape of the day can be consolidated at kilometer 10. A group of six runners has taken the initiative and the squad lets them do.

As expected, the attacks occur in these first kilometers but for now there is none.

Start this 14th stage. It is the third time that the Vuelta leaves San Vicente de la Barquera, it already did it in 2008, with the final victory of Alberto Contador, and in 2013 with a victory for Purito Rodríguez.

At kilometer 151, the runners will meet the intermediate sprint in the pass through Gijón and then the ascent to the only port of the stage, the Alto La Madera third category.

The profile has some ups and downs but without ascending to high altitude. They will reach 160 meters in the initial section in a small tack up to Casamaría and little else.

Day for sprinters whose teams will try to keep everything under control and prevent the escape from going too far.

Today there will be a flat stage, transitioning to what is coming tomorrow, that will travel along the Cantabrian coast from San Vicente de la Barquera to Oviedo.

Primoz Roglic remains the leader of the general and extended his advantage over Alejandro Valverde, now located two minutes and 25 seconds.

The victory was for Tadej Pogacar who also won the best young white jersey, stripping him of Miguel Ángel López.

At that stage that linked Bilbao with Los Machucos the getaway got an important advantage but the squad played it with the Slovenians Primoz Roglic, current red jersey, and Tadej Pogacar as outstanding figures.
