Technological Advances / CLEAN ENERGY XXI. Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) advances its product strategy with the launch of a new onshore platform: Siemens Gamesa 5.X, which includes two models, the SG 5.8-155 and the SG 5.8-170.

The new platform will be the most powerful of the company for the onshore segment, with a nominal power of 5.8 MW, and two rotor variants of 155 and 170 meters in diameter, offering maximum performance at high, medium and low wind sites. In addition, the 170 meter rotor is the largest in the offshore wind segment.

The Siemens Gamesa 5.X onshore platform incorporates proven technology and the experience accumulated by the company that has installed more than 90 GW worldwide. The report collected by Clean Energy XXI highlights that SG 5.8-155 increases the sweeping area in 14% compared to SG 4.5-145, and annual energy production by 20 percent (at wind speeds of 8 m / s). Regarding SG 5.8-170, these improvements are 37% for the sweeping area and 32 percent for annual energy production (at 7 m / s) compared to SG 4.5-145.

With a flexible design, the new platform optimizes the value chain from manufacturing to transportation, construction and maintenance, adapting to locations of all kinds. In addition, the two models incorporate some of Siemens Gamesa's differential technologies such as the double-power generator, a partial converter and a compact power train with a three-stage multiplier. In addition, the platform guarantees compliance with the most demanding network connection requirements thanks to an optional premium converter.

“Today we celebrate the second anniversary of Siemens Gamesa. I can't think of a better way to do it than with the launch of this new platform, further proof of our commitment to innovation and R&D, ”said Markus Tacke, CEO of SGRE.

Mark Albenze, CEO of Onshore and SGRE Services, said: “The large nominal power and the possibility of adapting it according to the needs of each project, combined with the two rotor options, make this platform one of the most versatile in the sector , ideal for all types of locations. Siemens Gamesa 5.X has a modular design to facilitate future developments that respond to the needs of the market and will allow our customers to achieve their profitability goals thanks to excellent performance and energy cost (LcoE) ”.

As part of the SGRE product portfolio, which represents a new way of working in the sector, the new turbines integrate advanced control technologies and strategies that optimize efficiency according to the conditions of each site. The power can be adapted according to the requirements and limitations of noise, ambient temperature or electrical performance.

The installation of the first prototype of SG 5.8-155 is planned for mid-2020 and its manufacture for the last quarter of the same year. For SG 5.8-170, the first prototype will be installed in the third quarter of 2020 and production will begin in the first quarter of 2021.
