SAS will offer passengers the option to buy biofuel for the flight – Transponder 1200

In order to make its operation increasingly sustainable and environmentally friendly, the multinational airline Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) announced on Wednesday, September 18, it will offer passengers the option to 'buy' biofuel for their flights. The initiative is a non-profit service and aims to increase the use of bi-sustainable fuels throughout its fleet.

With a fixed price of 10 euros or dollars (average of about 20 Mexican pesos) for a 'block' of fuel, equivalent to twenty minutes of flight, the intention of the Scandinavian airline is to replace the fossil aviation fuel in its operation with the equivalent value to biofuel. That is, for each block acquired, the amount will be reversed in the purchase of sustainable fuel to replace traditional fossil fuel.

The option will be available to passengers at the time of booking the tickets through their sales channels and later, during the preparation for boarding, including the check-in at the airline counters at the terminals. The airline's environmental policy includes the objective of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 25 percent by 2030.

According to Scandinavian Airlines, currently the volumes of biofuels produced are not sufficient and therefore, prices are three or four times more expensive than fossil fuel. Thus, its intention is to pave the way for a competitive market for large-scale biofuels that can be encouraged through its new auxiliary product offered to passengers.

Karl Sandlund, Executive Vice President of Scandinavian Airlinescommented:

We are now inviting our travelers to be part of the transition to a more sustainable way of traveling. This product facilitates the contribution of our clients to this development. It also shows the additional costs of biofuels and highlights the need for a greater supply of commercial biofuels. ”
