Russell, 25, was hit by a fast ball in 1-2 count, but did not immediately leave the game. He was served on the plate, then at first base, while doing some sprints to see if he could continue. Finally, he scored the first Cubs race, but did not go out to play shortstop at the bottom of the inning.

The Cubs have already lost the holder of the position, Javier Báez for a thumb injury; Russell has played shortstop all week instead. David Bote assumed Russell's position while Ian Happ entered the game at third base, where Bote had started.
