Currently known among the masses as Mercedes EQS (yet to be confirmed), it is speculated that the EQ Concept is the electrical side of the next generation of the Mercedes S Class (W223). We can say little about its exterior design, except that it will have very fluid lines and a coupé-style profile. Surely, having been conceived as an electric car, we will see a large wheelbase and relatively short overhangs.
Returning to the interior, we can appreciate a bold and minimalist design without practically no physical button. This four-seater saloon shows a spacious passenger compartment with rear seats separated by a center console that runs through the entire cabin. Despite the fall of the roof, there seems to be enough room for the heads of the rear occupants. Also, the absence of a B-pillar prompts us to think of "suicidal" opening doors.
The photos have been published by Mercedes-Benz on their Facebook page, and are accompanied by a brief description that says: “The story of EQ continues. We are pioneers in the future of sustainable modern luxury. Look at the vision of the interior design of a fully electric four-seater luxury sedan ”. Logically, the EQ Concept boasts the most sophisticated materials, the best of technologies and, broadly speaking, the best of what Daimler has.
The highlight of the interior is, without a doubt, the giant touch screen that dominates the center console. It makes us believe that this is really the EQS, since some of the spy photos that have been published of the next S-Class have revealed a structure dominated by a large vertical screen. Being this a prototype, the set looks more elegant, but the idea is the same. The physical controls stand out for their absence.
There are also four slightly smaller screens mounted on the armrest of each door in order to allow passengers to control multimedia preferences and window operation. Traditional rearview mirrors have also been replaced by screens, and the exteriors are relegated to a pair of small cameras on the A-pillar. A final screen acts as a dashboard behind the wheel.
It has a butterfly-type steering wheel that is likely to retract on the dashboard when autonomous driving mode is activated. It is not difficult to imagine that the front seats can turn towards the rear area to create a relaxing environment. Passengers could engage in a face-to-face conversation while the vehicle deals with the "tedious" task of driving. It is appreciated that Mercedes has arranged a steering wheel to drive the old way.
While the new generation of the S-Class is expected to reach dealerships over the next year, the fully electric side would do the same a few months later, perhaps at the end of the year or already in 2021. Rumors say that The apparent Mercedes EQS will feature electric motors on each axle, making it a four-wheel drive car. The next steps in the EQ range seem to point to a compact (Class A) and a middle saloon (Class C).
