The creator of BTCPay, Nicolas Dorier, announced the creation of a foundation that will financially support the growth and development of the project. The launch of the entity, which will be called BTCPay Server Foundation, took place in the framework of the Baltic Honeybadger 2019 event, which takes place this weekend in the city of Riga, Lithuania.

As reported in the official BTCPay Server blog, the creation of a foundation responds to the objective of solving the sustainability of the project. "We have reached a point where to grow even more, we need a rationalized and stable structure for people who spend a lot of time contributing," the publication notes.

It should be noted that BTCPay Server is an open source cryptocurrency payment processor, created in August 2017, which allows merchants to process their payments independently, without relying on third parties. It is a project maintained by a community of developers, collaborators and users, as indicated on its website.

As part of the launch, Nicolas Dorier informed, in his presentation of the Baltic Honeybadger 2019, that the new foundation received its first economic subsidy in the amount of USD 100,000. The contribution comes from the startup Square Crypto, founded by the creator and CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey.

According to the information, the foundation will function as an independent BTCPay entity, and its function will be guarantee a continuous flow of financing for project growth. However, they ensure that this new figure is in no way intended to control the development, monetize, claim or assume ownership of BTCPay Server.

The foundation's efforts would focus on the development of new BTCPay features, broadening its scope, maintaining electronic commerce complements and promoting the project, among others. The official announcement also clarifies that donations received by the foundation will not be used to develop support for altcoins, or integration to third-party services.

For its part, Square Crypto said in a statement that the contribution to the BTCPay Server Foundation is framed in the spirit of improving and promoting bitcoin. "BTCPay represents everything we love about open source bitcoin projects," the publication says.

It further states that BTCPay can use the amount donated by Square Crypto to “create anything, provided it is free and open source software that improves security, scalability, privacy, user experience or the fungibility of bitcoin, or all previous". Also, Square Crypto tweeted that the contribution is not about an investment in a competitor, but in the future of money.
