And although they hope to solve that weak point with the new 2020 car, Mattia Binotto, head of the Italian team, is realistic about changing course in the remainder of this season.
When asked about the conceptual differences between Mercedes and Ferrari, Binotto said: "Clearly there are quite different characteristics. At Ferrari we lack grip in certain areas, and that's where we should improve."
"Every time we go to circuits where there are many curves, the grip is important and a very high aerodynamic load is required to be fast, our weakness is evident."
"Can we address that before the end of the season? I don't think so, because the difference is too big in that regard. Can we improve the situation? Obviously we are working to do it."
Although the team is looking to introduce updates that allow them to perform better in each circuit, Binotto insists that this work does not jeopardize its development for next year's design.
"We are focusing on addressing the main problem next year."
"And given that the rules will remain stable in 2020, we believe that whatever we do this season will be useful for the next one. Yes, there is an important difference, and it will continue, but we hope to reduce it."
