Hurricane Dorian, one of the longest in history, left the territory of the United States yesterday to head for Canada, after ten days of travel in which it caused torrential rains with strong winds, abundant material damage and left a provisional balance of 43 dead in Bahamas.

Although the southeastern coast of the United States was the most scourged, especially the states of North and South Carolina, the most devastating effects occurred at its start on the islands of the northern Bahamas, where official provisional figures report 43 dead and the search for missing persons continues.

"The loss of life we are experiencing is catastrophic and devastating", said Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Minnis in a statement, in which he acknowledged that many people remain missing and that the death toll can increase significantly.

According to reports from the Bahamian media, hundreds of hurricane survivors took refuge in the air and sea terminals of the islands in order to evacuate in the direction of Nassau, the capital of the country.

Less than 10 percent of hurricanes since these phenomena are recorded remained active for as long as Dorian, experts said.

In the Carolinas, where the hurricane caused winds of more than 150 kilometers per hour, Tens of thousands of people remain without electricity and there are significant floods.

One of the most affected areas is the long series of barrier islands known as Outer Banks in North Carolina, where in one of them, Ocracoke, it is estimated that almost a thousand people remain isolated.

"Currently the island has no electricity, and many of the buildings and houses are still under water", explained the governor of North Carolina, Democrat Roy Cooper, at a press conference.

Meanwhile, Steve Harris, a resident of the Ocracoke, told the press how it happened “in minutes of barely having water to be between 1.2 and 1.8 meters”, and described the situation of "Catastrophic".

Despite this, North Carolina authorities repeated expressions of relief at the absence, for now, of deceased, and comparisons with Cyclone Florence, which a year ago left more than thirty deaths between that state, South Carolina and Virginia.

Where are you going

Dorian travels northeast at 40 kilometers per hour and was 260 kilometers southeast of Nantucket (Massachusetts) and 500 kilometers southeast of the city of Halifax (Canada), the National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported.

It is expected that it will land in Nova Scotia and affect the rest of the maritime provinces of eastern Canada, although the NHC hopes that by then it has already become a post-tropical cyclone.

"There are likely to be dangerous floods this weekend in parts of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, Southeast Newfoundland and Eastern Nova Scotia.", the NHC said about the impact on Canada.

The cyclone, still category 1 on the Saffir-Simpson scale of a total of 5, it will remain in that area until its displacement towards the North Atlantic before disappearing, according to the NHC.
