The company said Thursday that it plans to expand a test project that is already under construction, to build up to 220 giant wind turbines on a piece of ocean 27 miles offshore.
The project will generate 2,600 megawatts of electricity by 2026, enough energy to supply 650,000 homes. It is estimated to cost $ 7.8 billion.
The proposal "shows the seriousness with which we want to bring marine wind power on a commercial scale to Virginia, giving our customers what they have asked for: more renewable energy," said Dominion Vice President Mark D. Mitchell, through a Press release.
The announcement came a few days after Governor Ralph Northam issued an executive order asking state agencies to develop a plan for Virginia to produce 30 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. and for it to be totally carbon free by 2050.
The Northam order specified that said offshore wind farm would be completed in 2026 and generate 2,500 megawatts.
Dominion is building a 112,800-acre demonstration project that leases to the federal government on the Virginia Beach strip. That $ 300 million test will have a pair of turbines by next spring, generating about 12 megawatts later in 2020.
