Children, sometimes very young, locked up in detention centers. Mostly old warehouses on the outskirts. Packed in ice-cold rooms where artificial light works day and night. Hygiene conditions? Nonexistent. Care to treat many pathologies, sometimes fatal? Notoriously insufficient. Separated from their parents, sleeping on the ground with a blanket of survival on their backs, these children from Central America are detained for a few days, sometimes a few weeks, in these unworthy conditions. Not in a third world country but in the United States.

This report has the merit of pointing to a real humanitarian scandal. Arrived on the American territory after an exhausting journey from Guatemala, Honduras or Nicaragua in particular, these children, suddenly deprived of their parents or relatives, find themselves in hell while dreaming of an American paradise.

Deaths

Journalist Laura Aguirre from Carcer has come closer to some centers in Texas and New Mexico, ultra-protected areas, where staff categorically refuse to testify. But other leading witnesses do it. "The police insulted us, calling us pigs, lousy, threatening to send us back to our country"says a 12-year-old boy who lived for a few days in detention. A nurse, a former employee at one of these centers, explains: "There are many sick children. They can not even wash their hands. I saw people who had not been allowed to take a shower for twenty-six days! "

In such conditions, dramas occur. 7, 8 or 16 year olds die and some cases are studied in detail in this report. The reactions ? Some demonstrations of citizens scandalized in front of detention centers, shocked democratic parliamentarians, lawyers who went to war against the government responsible for the deaths of imprisoned children. The answer of President Trump, via a Tweet? "If migrants are unhappy with their conditions in the center, just tell them not to come. Problem solved ! "
