The Canadian Minister of Transportation Marc Garneau and Sylvie Vachon, president of the Port of Montreal, announced an investment of $ 37 million Canadian dollars to increase the efficiency, capacity and safety of transport by reducing waiting times and bottlenecks for container movements in the port.

“Nearly 1.7 million containers transited through the container terminals of the port in 2018, an increase of 9% compared to 2017. The trucking industry appreciates the announcement of Minister Garneau, as it recognizes the growing economic importance of the Port of Montreal and the role that the truck industry plays in the success of the Port, ”he said Patrick Turcotte, member of the CTA Board and former President of the Quebec Truck Association.

The financing of the Government of Canada will address for example a computer system that will allow drivers to pre-register at the port, in addition to a railway bridge and a communication network to reduce traffic.

“The trucking industry faces a critical shortage of drivers. The investment will ensure that our vehicles operating in the Port of Montreal maximize their allowed driving hours in a productive way, ”Turcotte added.

"An efficient port process could lead to greater economic growth in the area and perhaps fewer trucks would be needed to serve the Port despite economic expansion, which is a victory for industry, the economy and the environment," he added.
