(Washington) Former CIA agent Valerie Plame, who became famous in the United States at the start of the war in Iraq, today launched a spectacular campaign video. It announced in May that it would run in 2020 to a seat of the US Congress for the Democratic Party.
The secret agent career of Valerie Plame, 55 years old today, had been broken when her husband at the time, an ambassador of the United States, had accused in 2003 the administration of Republican President George W. Bush to lie on the threat represented by Iraq.
Shortly after, in July 2003, the American press revealed that Mme Plame was a CIA agent. It directly accuses the Bush administration of being behind this leak.
Revealing a classified secret defense identity to the press is a federal crime in the United States.
"My career at the CIA has been cut short by partisan politics, but I have not finished serving my country. We need more people in Congress who have the courage to stand up for what is right, "she said in a statement announcing that she would run for a seat in the House of Representatives in November 2020.
Based in the state of New Mexico, she will run in a constituency represented in the lower house by Democrats since 1999.
"I will work as hard to defend the people of New Mexico" in Washington as I did to defend our country against nuclear threats, "writes the Democratic candidate, who launches her campaign with a focus on access to the health system and the high costs of drugs.
The former CIA agent has twins in their twenties, Samantha and Trevor Wilson. Now that she no longer works for the intelligence agency, she enjoys "skiing, hiking and camping in the mountains of northern New Mexico," said her statement.
