Six in ten Americans polled in a new poll said a recession was likely in the coming year, due to escalating trade war between the US and China.
While 56% of respondents gave an overall positive rating to the US economy, a majority of Americans felt that President Donald Trump's trade and economic policies were making the recession more likely over the next 12 months, according to a poll of ABC News and the Washington Post unveiled Tuesday.
The survey revealed a partisan economic division, with 90 percent of Republicans judging the economy favorably, compared with 52 percent of independents and only 33 percent of Democrats.

In addition, only 38 percent of respondents approve of President Trump's performance in the White House, down 6 points from the peak of his approval rating in July (44 percent).
According to the Washington Post, the investigation revealed that one of Mr. Trump's key arguments for his re-election, a strong economy, is starting to show signs of "potential turbulence," with voters fearing the dispute will ongoing trade with China will eventually drive up the price of goods for US consumers.
This survey was conducted between September 2 and 5 among 1,003 adults with a margin of error of 3.5%.
