In a rematch of their first-round match last year at the US Open, Denis Shapovalov outscored Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-1, 6-1, and 6-4 on Tuesday.

If Auger-Aliassime had been forced to retire at the same tournament in 2018, this time, he found no response to the attacks of his rival who won in less than 90 minutes.

The Quebecker suffered from heart palpitations which forced him to retire last year.

After reaching the semifinals at the Winston-Salem Open last week, Shapovalov seems to have finally regained his mettle. He scored 28 winners against Auger-Aliassime, who managed just nine.

Shapovalov avenged a 6-2, 7-6 (7) setback at the hands of Auger-Aliassime in May at the Madrid Open.

In the second round, Shapovalov will face the winner of the match between Switzerland's Henri Laaksonen and Italy's Marco Cecchinato.

For his part, Vasek Pospisil caused a shock wave as he beat the ninth world racquet Karen Khachanov after a five-set marathon that ended with a score of 4-6, 7-5. , 7-5, 4-6 and 6-3.

This is Pospisil's fifth career victory against a top-10 world member. Their duel lasted three hours 50 minutes.

In the second round, Pospisil will cross the line with the American Tennys Sandgren, 72nd in the world. Sandgren defeated Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 1-6, 6-7 (2), 6-4, 7-6 (5), 7-5.

Classified 15^e seeded in the women's draw, Canada's Bianca Andreescu advanced to the second round by beating the American and 407^e world player Katie Volynets in two sets of 6-2 and 6-4.
