On the first day of the summit of G7 in Biarritz, the American media fear especially the blows of brilliance which is customary Donald Trump. From French wines to China and the climate: the subjects of discord are not lacking.
The statement held live at 1 pm (Paris time), by the French president in which he summarizes the issues of this summit (international conflicts, the world economy, the fight against inequalities, climate …), is passed however, almost unnoticed across the Atlantic. Emmanuel Macron does not mention once the name of his American counterpart, but evokes a "Escalation" without more details while many observers expect, not without gluttony, a duel "Macron-Trump".
Threats in all directions
"Just a month ago, Trump caused a serious setback (in French text) transcontinental with Emmanuel Macron on the question of the tax imposed by France on GAFA (Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple …) and other US companies, threatening to tax in retaliation – my God ! – French wines "continues the daily USA Today, whose correspondent in Biarritz amuses himself with decorating his text with French expressions. "My God, Trump is coming to G7"… so this popular newspaper, always in French.
"New phase" in the trade war
More seriously, the American newspapers fear that this summit will further aggravate relations between Washington and Beijing, already at a low ebb. The recent threats of Donald Trump, urgent US companies to "Stop any business with Beijing" announce a "New phase" in the trade war between the two countries, according to The Washington Post. More generally, his "Erratic approach" of the world economy, in which the United States plays a major, if not "Raises concerns", adds The New York Times.
The environment is also a source of friction between Emmanuel Macron and Donald Trump, who last year chose to withdraw the United States signature of the Paris agreement on climate, concluded in 2015. Also, just recently, the American president has taken the exact opposite of Emmanuel Macron on the Amazon, plagued by violent fires, by providing support to their Brazilian counterpart, Jair Bolsonaro.
