According to the new agreement, the regions that the Assad regime elements have recently won over the Sochi boundaries are not touched. On the contrary, because the Assad regime will not be withdrawn, the Sochi agreement is “renewed” with the new agreement announced in Moscow.
TURKEY, “GUARANTOR” HAS BECOME
The M-5 highway was already fully under the control of the regime as a result of Russia-backed attacks by Assad’s army over the past few months. With the ceasefire agreement in Moscow, regime control over the M-5 became clear.
The “ceasefire” was declared for the conflicts in the last few weeks regarding the control of the M-4 highway, which the Turkish Armed Forces also involved. It was agreed on the “joint patrol” of Russian and Turkish soldiers in the region between Trumba and Ayn El Havra, near Serakib, where the road was the most clashed.
With this “joint patrol” included in the text of the agreement, the elements of the Turkish Armed Forces have also been turned into “guarantors” so that the road is not again under the jihadists’ control. If the jihadists try to take back the highway, not only the Russian but Turkish soldiers will intervene in accordance with the agreement signed in Moscow today.
ESAD IS NOT BEING RETURNED
President Erdogan asked for “the regime to return to the Sochi reconciliation boundaries” in almost every speech he made in Idlib where the conflicts increased and the forces affiliated with the Assad regime made great progress;
The Moscow agreement does not contain any element regarding Assad’s withdrawal from his army recently.
TURKISH OBSERVATION POINTS WILL STAY, BUT…
With the agreement of Moscow, 12 Turkish observation points previously decided and established in Sochi will continue to work.
However, during the Sochi reconciliation, half of the Turkish observation points, which were completely in opposition and under the control of the jihadist terrorists, remained within the regime-controlled region with the advance of the Assad army.
In the Moscow agreement, these observation points continue to function. However, it was recorded in the statements made by the leaders that the task was determined only as “ceasefire monitoring”. Erdogan announced that the observation points will “watch the truce only.”
In other words, he stated that there would be no action against these points in order to withdraw the regime in a diplomatic manner.
HIGHLIGHT OF “SYRIA ARAB REPUBLIC”
The common text was read by Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu. When talking about Syria, the use of the name “Syrian Arab Republic” drew attention.
The name of the Syrian Arab Republic is also critical in that it is the name in which the Assad regime is represented in the UN.
ERDOĞAN DON’T TELL “DOSTUM”, PREFER TO “SAYIN PUTİN”
Erdogan and Putin met a total of 8 times last year, and three times this year, even though we are still in March.
Erdogan used the address “My friend Vladimir” many times, especially when talking about Putin during the meetings held last year. However, after the Moscow agreement, Erdogan’s only appeal to Putin as “Mr. President” and “Mr. Putin” drew attention.
