“Unexpected letter, I have to respect the laws. Franks? We are with ACF”

Dear Florentines,
in these difficult days for the country and for our city we are all engaged in this battle against the contagion of the Coronavirus and the economic crisis that is consequently affecting our territories. For this reason, first of all I want to thank all of you, starting from the medical and health personnel, for what you are doing.
In the meantime, an unexpected letter from the President of ACF Fiorentina has arrived, announcing that he will not present any offer for the construction of a new privately owned stadium in the Mercafir area. This hypothesis, which can be implemented since 2012 according to municipal regulations and proposed to the current Fiorentina property since the first meetings, precisely to meet the needs of fast times, reasonable costs and total control.
I am very sorry to learn that, despite our demonstrated efforts, the property believes today that it does not want to make this important investment for the fans and for Florence.
If the ground of Mercafir was mine, as a Florentine, purple fan, I would immediately give it to the team of our city. However, as Mayor, public administrator, I have a duty to respect the rules and I cannot use the money of my citizens to cover the costs and allow the legitimate profits of a public limited company like ACF Fiorentina.
It is a pity that an extraordinary investment opportunity is not collected that does not only concern the sports facility but at least another 30,000 square meters of private economic activities, in addition to those normally provided inside a modern stadium.
As you know, it is not the Municipality that can change the national laws on the protection of the Franks but we will continue to be alongside Fiorentina in every initiative aimed at making interventions on monuments easier, with a view to their enhancement.
I confirm all esteem and sympathy for the President Rocco Commisso, his collaborators and the company and I hope that a clear, constructive and concrete will in the common interest will develop as soon as possible. We are there and we will be there.
