The British health authorities have extended the indication of the precautionary measure of self-isolation for two weeks for those arriving or returning to the United Kingdom from the entire Italian territory, in the presence of even mild symptoms of coronavirus. This was announced tonight by Professor Chris Witty, principal medical consultant of the London government, specifying that the lawyer – so far limited by the Foreign Office to those arriving from Northern Italy – is linked “to the evolution of the situation” in the Peninsula.
“The evolution of the situation in Italy made us decide that it was prudent to extend the geographical area (involved in the indication of self-isolation at home) from northern Italy to all of Italy at this point”, stressed the professor Whitty. The indication remains the same: voluntary isolation for anyone with flu symptoms upon return from Italy, with the exception of those arriving from the 11 Municipalities of Lombardy and Veneto declared in lockdown by the Italian government, for which the same precaution is required even in the absence of symptoms. Whitty therefore confirmed the 115 infections reported to date in the United Kingdom, with 25 more cases: 17 contracts in countries indicated as the current “epicenter” of the infection, Italy included, and 8 instead fell ill directly across the Channel, through contacts to which you are currently trying to trace it. The transition from the phase of “containment” to that of an attempt to “slow down” the spread of a virus that is now present has also been confirmed, with further measures already being studied by the government of Boris Johnson in a series of emergency meetings and which should to be announced starting next Monday.
