For the first time in 9 months: an increase in the number of arrests on the US-Mexico border

The phenomenon is of great concern to Washington, as it has been declining every month since last May. On the other hand, the 37,000 infiltrators arrested last month on the border are less than half the amount arrested in February 2019

After nine consecutive months in which the number of arrests on the southern border has decreased, data from the immigration authorities have revealed that in February, there was a slight increase in the figure.

According to a statement from the Customs and Border Protection Agency (CBP), in February a little more than 37,000 people were arrested, a slight increase from the 36,600 infiltrators arrested in January.

The nine consecutive months in which the number of arrests has dropped has been, for many, one of President Trump’s best accomplishments, led by President Trump, but the change in trend is certainly a concern among senior Home Office officials. However, when comparing the data for February 2019 – then more than 76,000 people arrested on the southern border – consider the long-term trend to be positive.

Mark Morgan, executive director of the CBP, explained this morning that the changes the Trump administration has made to immigration policy are the ones that have led to a decline in recent times. According to him, the fact that every infiltrator who reaches the border is punished – be it detention or deportation to another country – helps enforce the policy: “In 95% of cases we find the way to expel a person back to his or her country of origin or to a third country. Absolutely, ”he said.
