Contagions are falling, inpatients and especially victims are decreasing. After almost three weeks of prohibitions, blockages and restrictions, the now ex-red zone of the Lower Lodigiano begins to see a way out. In fact, the area of the ten municipalities isolated after the discovery of the outbreak at the Codogno hospital has been recording a small but sensitive, and above all constant, slowdown of the epidemic for a few days. The positive cases in the province of Lodi are no longer the record in Lombardy, today the hottest front of the Covid-19 emergency has moved to the Bergamo area, to Brescia and partly to Milan. An aspect that certainly cannot breathe a sigh of relief, but which – as highlighted by the Lombard Councilor for Welfare Giulio Gallera – represents the first concrete sign that the very harsh measures taken in the red zone have worked.
Coronavirus, the infections go down: Codogno tries to start again
The latest update of the data, relating to 2 pm on March 9th, says 928 cases of coronavirus positivity have been reported in the province of Lodi. A figure similar to that of Cremona (916) and lower than that of Bergamo (1,245) the current front of the health emergency with the Municipalities of Alzano Lombardo and Nembro. But the most interesting data is that of the individual locations: 185 cases in Codogno, 137 in Castiglione d’Adda, 105 in Casalpusterlengo, the most critical centers of the ten isolated Municipalities. Here for weeks the number of victims ascertained with and for coronavirus has never stopped increasing, at the rate of almost two a day as in the small town of Castiglione: 4,600 inhabitants and twenty dead in two weeks.
But the March 9 data tell us that the growth curve has started to slow down sharply. Because the day before, the cases registered in the province of Lodi were 853, 75 fewer. And on March 7, 811, so 42 less. Always on the rise but no longer at the almost exponential rate of the first weeks: on March 5 there were already 658. The most significant number regards the usual three Municipalities of reference in the red zone. If on March 9 there were 185 cases in Codogno, the day before there were 15 fewer (170) and on March 5 132, then 54 less than four days later. The same is true for Castiglione: 137 yesterday, 121 four days before, therefore with really contained growth, +16. In Casale, in the same reference period, a +22 was scored. The figure on the victims from Covid-19 also decreased, which now sees the hottest centers in Brescia, Bergamo and Milan.
According to the data of the Lombardy Department of Welfare above all, hospitalizations of patients from the ten countries of the former red zone declined. There are no such precise statistics on this, but the graphs developed by the Region actually show a strong slowdown on the red Municipalities. The sacrifices, even the hardest ones, worked – said Gallera -. We must thank the citizens of Codogno and the other countries because thanks to them the epidemic could be slowed down. So much so that on the basis of these data – whose decreasing curve will have to be confirmed, it is hoped, in the coming weeks – the experts of the Istituto di Sanitio have decided to reopen the red zone and standardize Codogno to the rest of Lombardy. Today in the former red zone it is possible to go out to work, the shops are slowly reopening as are the bars.
In reality, there is an aspect that falsifies, and not a little, the absolute values of the statistics. what concerns positive covid-19s. In the red zone – as well as in the rest of Lombardy – in recent weeks there has been a change of strategy and you are subjected to swabs only in case of hospitalization. So most of those who have symptoms, but not so serious, are treated at home but without tampons. Basically, the positive results would be much less than in real cases. Same problem for the rest of Lombardy, for. But the substance does not change much, because if it is true that the cases subjected to the swab are the most serious, the same principle was valid ten days ago. So it is possible to say that the serious cases grew in the first 9 days of March, but no more exponentially as happened in the first days. The same goes for the victims.
Of course, life in the former red zone remains problematic and exits must be limited to the maximum, as in the rest of Italy now, but with even more responsibility. Because Codogno, Castiglione and Casale were the first and most important isolated outbreak in Lombardy and the fire has not yet been extinguished. But many who have suffered the contagion and manifested mild forms in the meantime have recovered, starting to feed that principle of herd immunity, that is, the ever-growing percentage of the population that developed antibodies to the virus. A fundamental element for the regression of the infections. The sacrifice of the red zone, therefore, was a salvation for the rest of the country.
