Master & Commander challenge on the edge of the sea airs on Rai 4 today, Saturday 25 April, starting from 9.20 pm. The film was made in 2003 in the United States of America by several film companies including Twenty Century Fox and Universal Pictures under the direction of Peter Weir. The subject was taken from the novel written by Patrick O’Brian, the screenplay was revised by the same director in collaboration with John Collee, the role of director of photography was entrusted to Russell Boyd, the editing was made by Lee Smith While the costumes worn on the scene by the various actors were designed and created by Wendy Stites. The cast includes Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany, James D’Arcy, Edward Woodall, Chris Larkin, Max Pirkis and Jack Randall.

We find ourselves in Europe in the year 1805 a period in which the so-called Napoleonic wars are underway with which the nascent French empire is trying to conquer and dictate law over the entire old continent. Napoleon’s main opponent at the moment does not seem to be Russia but England, above all for the capacity of the British Navy. However, the British Empire has no intention of allowing all this and that is why it decides to send its own ship commanded by Captain Aubrey with a crew of just under 200 units.

Its mission is to intercept a French warship that has been sent to the Caribbean Sea to transit through Panama and then enter the Pacific Ocean. The first clash that the British ship will have with the French one will be nothing short of dramatic as even in reason of the fog the French ship manages to prevail without any problem also leveraging on the clearly superior fire capacity. The British ship with a bit of luck and above all by exploiting the fog manages to save itself. Despite all this, the captain of the British ship does not want to give up returning to his homeland as defeated, even if he is aware of how clearly the French ship is stronger and more powerful than his.

At this point he orders his men to repair the ship as soon as possible in order to be able to carry out an attack again and so an incredible hunt will begin in which two different types of ships will clash and above all two very different mentalities as regards the military approach. Eventually the British commander will be able to make his cunning prevail by managing to overcome what was a clear inferiority in terms of firepower.
