“In the silence of St. Peter’s Square and the empty Basilica of the people – whose images touched everyone, believers and non-believers, deeply resounded the echo of His highest appeal to abandon all illusory selfishness and to fully live the Easter message, courageously walking the ‘path of service’ “. He writes it in a message sent to Pope Francis, the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.

“Your Holiness – reads the message of the head of state – the feast of Holy Easter offers me the opportunity to offer you the most sincere wishes of all and my personal Italians. Over the past few weeks countless families and communities, in Italy and worldwide , they lived – and continue to live – moments of profound pain, in which the experience of solitude, precariousness, economic uncertainties was added to mourning and separation from loved ones. “In this time of profound concern – continues Mattarella – Your Holiness has not made suffering humanity suffer the consolation of His paternal accompaniment, the relief of His concrete and generous closeness, the invitation to make gestures of attention and concern in towards those in need on the emotional, spiritual or material level “.

“In the silence of St. Peter’s Square and the empty Basilica of the people – whose images touched everyone, believers and non-believers, – the echo of His very high appeal to abandon every illusory selfishness and to live the message fully resounded. Easter, courageously walking the “way of service”.

“In thanking you warmly for the vibrant words of life and hope that Your Holiness has repeatedly addressed to Italy in the current difficult circumstances – he concludes -, I renew to you with sentiments of sincere consideration the most fervent wishes for Easter and for the now next anniversary of San Giorgio “.
