The return of Fiat Punto it could be much more than a simple hypothesis. One of the most successful models of the Turin brand of the last twenty years has been shelved for some time but the future could deliver a new version of the compact segment B.

Fiat Strada, second generation for South America

The key to getting Fiat Punto back on the road is obviously the merger between FCA and PSA. In recent days, despite the Coronavirus emergency and the consequent crisis in the auto sector, we have returned to talk about the partnership between the Italian-American group and the French one, with the parties who said they were optimistic to arrive at a conclusion of the process which may be in line with the forecasts made at the end of 2019, when the agreement was signed. PSA CEO Carlos Tavares he even spoke of an acceleration of the work, with the parts that would be constantly in contact and at work, even if at a distance, to speed up the casting process. This could play in favor of Fiat, which has announced some new features in the range for next year, above all as regards the structure: Olivier Francois spoke of the desire to focus strongly on the B segment, effectively abandoning that of city cars.

Elkann: “Merger without closing factories”

Good news for Fiat Punto which could precisely be reborn thanks to the technological synergies announced between FCA and PSA. The new Punto could in fact exploit immediately the CMP platform developed by the French group and successfully used by both Peugeot for the 208, which was awarded among other things as Car of the Year 2020 and by Opel Corsa. The versatility of PSA’s architecture would then allow it to already have a structure suitable for electrification, with the new Punto that could be born immediately as a purely electric vehicle, thus expanding FCA’s battery model portfolio, which currently boasts the sun Panda and 500 Hybrid, waiting for the plug-in hybrid of Jeep and Alfa Romeo and especially the electric 500. The return of Fiat Punto would thus allow the Lingotto to also fall into a strategic and highly appreciated segment: to be considered, however, there will be possible market conflicts with the other post-merger brands but above all the ability to establish ourselves in a segment in a moment of crisis .
