A team of cancer treatment specialists from around the world, coronavirus (COVID-19) has published the first international medical recommendations for the treatment of cancer patients during the outbreak.
These recommendations are based on a study called “An Applied Approach to the Management of Cancer Patients During the New Coronavirus Disease 2019 Outbreak”.
Funded by the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation and Roche, the study was led by Emirate physician Humaid Al-Shamsi, Advisor to Oncology and Cancer Diseases, Associate Professor of the University of Sharika and President of the Emirates Cancer Society.
Mohammed Haji Al Khouri, General Manager of Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation, stated that the Foundation supports worldwide scientific research to protect human health regardless of religion, race, color, gender or language, stemming from the tolerance and approach to humanity reflected by the international human attitudes taken by the UAE’s leadership. .
Stressing that supporting scientific research is one of the Foundation’s priorities, especially during the current crisis, Al Khouri noted that international cooperation between the international group of experts under the supervision of the Emirates Cancer Foundation is a global success for the UAE.
Al Khouri, Dr. Al Shamsi and the science team who prepared the study expressed his hope that he will give hope to many cancer patients from all over the world during the current crisis.
“We have seen the dangers faced by cancer patients around the world during the current coronavirus outbreak and there is no international recommendation to treat them during the crisis. Therefore, we bring together international experts to make recommendations as soon as possible to create a global reference for all cancer therapists. Therefore, we collaborated with the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation and Swiss company Roche, a pioneer in the field of health and oncology technology, to collect data from Hubei in Italy, Taiwan, Singapore, the USA, Canada and Kuwait, China. ”
“The study was supervised by the Emirates Cancer Foundation under the roof of the Emirates Medical Association (EMA). We worked 24 hours a day for three weeks and made recommendations for coping with cancer patients during the coronavirus pandemic for the first time in the world.”

The study was published in the latest edition of “The Oncologist”, a medical journal dedicated to the best care practices for cancer patients.
The study concluded that the risk and benefit assessment should be individualized for active intervention in the cancer population during an infectious disease epidemic, and the delay in elective surgery or chemotherapy for cancer patients with a low risk of progression should be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
He also proposed visits to outpatient patients and minimization of selective admissions to help reduce exposure and further transmission of COVID-19.
