Tonight at 21.25 on the Nine will air A week from God, film of Tom Shadyac in which Jim Carrey plays Bruce Nolan, a journalist who dreams of becoming anchorman and will instead end up having divine power in his own hands, in a literal sense. Indeed, God interpreted by Morgan Freeman, will grant him all his powers for a period of seven days.
While the Most High takes a vacation, Bruce will have to face the responsibilities deriving from his new role, risking losing the love of his life (Jennifer Aniston).
Released in 2003, A week from God he soon became a real cult and, moreover, an opportunity to prove once again the great histrionic skills of Jim Carrey. On the occasion of the passage on TV here are some curiosities that you may not know about the film.
1) A week from God with the wrong number
Instead of using the classic 555 prefix – as is always the case in films – the telephone number used by God in the film turned out to be an effective number in the United States of America. The result? The owner of the telephone user was bombarded with calls, with the request to be able to speak with God. In the end, the producers bought the user in order to avoid other problems.
2) Marcel
Do you know the scene in which, in an alley, Bruce takes revenge on some thugs who had given him a hard time? In that scene the criminal leader suffers a rather painful punishment that has to do with a little monkey. But it’s not a common monkey: just like it recently did too David Lynch, the director of A week from God he chose the monkey who had played Marcel in an arc of episodes of Friends, the pet with which Ross tries to ignore his feelings for Rachel.
3) A week from God, but not in Egypt
The film with Jim Carrey was completely banned from Egypt, due to the content and plot that according to local authorities were considered sacrilegious.
4) Buffalo, New York
The film is entirely set in Buffalo, not far from Toronto, Ontario, where Jim Carrey grew up, watching the Channel 7 news, led by Irv Weinstein as sent on the field to which the character of Bruce is still inspired. Despite the setting, however, the film was shot entirely in a Universal set: the same used for the trilogy of Back to the Future.
5) It’s the bible!
In the scene where Jim Carrey he is celebrating his new job position, you can see him leaning on a golden calf. It is a fairly clear homage to history and the parable related to the figure of Moses. But actually, A week from God it is full of references to the Book of Books: like when Bruce splits his soup in two or walks over a puddle.
