Jerome Powell has spent most of his life working hard behind the scenes, first as an investment banker and then as the bank’s chairman. Even as the highest-ranking US central bank official, and some believe the most important figure in the global economy is low profile.
Powell is a devout cyclist who believes in proper nutrition (granola yogurt and breakfast for breakfast), wakes up early (5:15), and reads stress books to relax (John La Cara is particularly fond of him). He is known for his steamboats on national debt. Everything about him, from the simple language he uses at press conferences to his behavior on Capitol Hill, broadcasts that he is a normal, non-dramatic person to connect with. However, he plays a leading role in the soap opera that is Washington’s President Donald Trump. Powell’s picture of Trump’s tweets on Twitter is that of a detached policy-maker determined to bring the US economy alone by keeping interest rates too high.
