It ended yesterday shakedown in Sepang that saw the testers of the houses involved in MotoGP together with the three rookies – Alex Marquez, Iker Lecuona and Brad Binder – who were thus able to gain some confidence with the class racing cars in view of the real three days of testing scheduled from Friday to Sunday on the circuit located near Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. The owners of the houses that can take advantage of the concessions also toured with them, namely the KTM and Aprilia that led to Sepang Lorenzo Savadori since Andrea Iannone was unable to take part in the shakedown for the events related to the suspension for doping.
MotoGP | Iannone, the accusation: “Aesthetic doping”
The houses have brought and will bring to the track many innovations in terms of engine, chassis and chassis, the eye will surely be able to focus on the chronometric measurements, but the other aspect that will be clearly visible will be the aerodynamic innovations as regards the fins which now characterize all the fairings of the MotoGP prototypes. During the presentation, Honda showed off a solution similar to that used by Ducati at the beginning of 2019, with further less accentuated profiles below the main ones in line with the air-box.
During the shakedown Stefan Bradl tested at least three different fairings as evidenced by the gallery in which the German is immortalized riding a Repsol hull, then the red and blue one, colors of the Honda house, and finally with a whole simply black as often happens in tests. In home Ducati Michele Pirro has tried a new hull. As noted by the French newspaper PaddockGP.com the position of the upper fins is less inclined and the lower flaps seem more horizontal with the aim of generating less resistance.
Hulls in profusion even at home KTM. Pol Espargarò in particular on Monday shot with a decidedly aggressive RC-16 with a larger and vertical air box similar to that of Ducati and Yamaha. Also noteworthy is the ‘serrated’ hull in front of the handlebar knobs in addition to the ones decidedly more accentuated than the 2019 prototype brought to the track by the Tech-3 team riders Miguel Oliveira and Iker Lecuona.
L’Aprilia it is certainly the bike that has intrigued the most, also because the RS-GP 2020 is completely renewed compared to the sister who preceded it. The racing department of Noale has put the MotoGP prototype on a strict diet, the result is a smaller, less bulky and much narrower bike. The wing of the RS-GP 2020 is destined to make school, we will see if other houses will take inspiration from the solution brought to the track by the Venetian house.
Also there Suzuki, on the track with the test driver Sylvain Guintoli, presented new more aggressive fins compared to the 2019 configuration. Hamamatsu’s house hopes to have found a few more horses to give Alex Rins and Joan Mir a slightly faster bike on the straights , true weakness of the GSX-RR.
No particular news at home Yamaha, at least in terms of fairings. Massimo Meregalli said that Jorge Lorenzo has ridden the M1 in the 2019 version to give the Mallorcan a clear reference as a starting point before going into the development paths for 2020 and for the next seasons.
