Journalist Ilana Dayan revealed this morning (Thursday) during an interview with Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu in the IDF waves that he has built a member of the LGBT community. In an interview that criticized the decision to award the Israel Prize for Torah Literature to Rabbi Yaakov Ariel, who previously defined community members as “disabled people who have a real problem to be solved through mental and drug treatments,” she confronted Rabbi Eliyahu. “To say that Rabbi Ariel is disqualified from receiving the Israel Prize is a terrorist opinion,” the rabbi said. In response, Ilana Dayan told him: “It is terrorism to come and tell my son, ‘I will tell you how to live and how to run a family.’ This is terrorism.” Rabbi Eliyahu, a member of the Chief Rabbinate Council, supported the interview with Rabbi Ariel: “It is not only Rabbi Ariel’s opinion – it is the opinion of all Israel’s rabbis, and they are allowed to speak their minds.”
In 2016, Rabbi Ariel said members of the community “are disabled who suffer from a real problem that needs to be resolved through mental and drug treatments.” In May 2014, he ruled that an apartment for a lesbian couple should not be rented. After the publication of his response caused a stir, his bureau clarified that it was “a personal point answer to a person facing an educational question, how to explain to his children that he is renting a family apartment out of common norms.”
The CEO of the Association for LGBT Ohad Hashki said in response: “The decision to award the Israel Prize to a rabbi who advocates hatred of others is a disgraceful decision that trains the violence and hatred that members and members of the proud community absorb in Israel every day and every hour.” Hizki added, “This is a certificate of poverty for the Israeli government and the Minister of Education, whose actions and statements continue to bring us back to dark times. We must not give in to the same hatred, we have all seen where it can lead.” Adv. Irit Rosenblum, Founder and CEO of “New Family”, added: “Peretz’s Education Minister apparently decided to award the Israel Prize for Hate, because it is the only category that Rabbi Distributor Yaakov Ariel is eligible for.” According to her, this is “another unjust decision by an unworthy minister of education”.
