Statement on behalf of the Union was made by Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Relations and Security Policies. “In order to build fair and lasting peace, final status titles that have not yet been resolved must be resolved through the direct negotiations of the parties,” Borrell said in his written statement. Borell also stated that the plan presented on January 28 is far from international parameters. The statement stressed that the European Union continues to support a two-state solution within the framework of the 1967 borders.
The European Union pointed out that by condemning Trump to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in 2017, Washington has overshadowed its mediation role in the region.
Due to the different approaches of the member states to the Palestinian issue, the European Union follows a cautious policy on the Middle East. While some countries recognize Palestine as the state, the Union supports the resolution of the issue through negotiations.
TRWhat does ump’s plan include?
The plan, called Trump’s “Agreement of the Century” and containing solutions for the Palestinian issue, seeks the establishment of a Palestinian state where East Jerusalem is the capital. The same plan foresees that Jewish settlements established in areas annexed in the West Bank will be given to Israel. Trump’s plan differs greatly from the 1967 borders seen as the basis of a solution to the Palestinian issue.
While Trump’s plan was welcomed by Israel, it was rejected by the Palestinian Authority and the Arab League.
