A fuss hits Italian biathlon a week before the World Championships in Anterselva. In an interview with Messaggero Veneto, Lisa Vittozzi has attacked both Dorothea Wierer and, above all, the national team’s technical staff. The object of the dispute dates back to last season: you will remember that the two blue were in full struggle for the overall World Cup standings. During the World Championships in Oestersund (which, unlike all the other winter disciplines, also award points for the crystal ball) Wierer did not take part in the women’s relay, officially due to an indisposition. An episode that Vittozzi didn’t digest at all: the sappadina claims that in this way the partner-rival benefited from an additional rest and, on the whole, from an advantage against him, which was furthermore endorsed by the coaches. An event that literally sent the 25-year-old into confusion, leading her to face the last races without lucidity, which then saw her succumb in direct confrontation with her compatriot.

Vittozzi tells of a story that compromised the relationship with Wierer: “For me, yes, but only for me. I am no longer cold towards him, but sportily there are things that I would not have done. I would have made different choices. We haven’t talked about it and I don’t care. We are not friends, we are teammates and rivals. In sport there are decisions to be made and you have to live with it. You don’t necessarily have to get along with everyone. You and I have two opposite characters and two opposite characters don’t always get along. But we respect each other and are two rivals“.

The Friulian then entered the specific question: “We were first and second in the rankings, she rested for the relay and I didn’t. I took it badly. I did not share that choice (of the technicians, ed.) And it made me nervous. I was no longer serene, I got to the limit (referring to the last seasonal races, ed)“.

After the difficulties encountered between December and January, the blue has now set a different approach to competitions: “I changed, this thing that happened changed me both positively and negatively. I believed in my abilities, I am very confident. I tried to identify myself in the situation and I thought that getting a bitter liver for these things here does not lead to anything. I think of my career, of feeling good, of doing what I can do both for myself and for the team. The rest does not count, it slips on me“.

Lisa Vittozzi has therefore not used any turn of words to attack the technicians, guilty of having somehow preferred them to Wierer in the run-up to the World Cup. It should be emphasized how the current coaching staff has brought Italian biathlon at the height of its history in 2019, not only with the first and second place in the general classification of Wierer and Vittozzi, but also with the third place in the World Cup medal with 5 podiums (2 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze).

However, to increase the dose he thought about it Nadia Fontana, mother of Lisa Vittozzi, who in turn lashed out against technical management through some comments on social networks: “It is true, there are timelines to be respected but nobody thought of respecting Lisa last year when one step away from the Cup they blew her balance allowing Doro to rest. The fault was clearly not Doro’s but of the technicians who at a World Cup were unable to handle the situation. Lisa has not digested this thing and will never digest it and has done well to say what she thinks, like it or not she is so, clear. Toads hurt and you have to spit them out to be healthy. As a mother, I am very proud of what she is and what she said. So many things are not known and therefore one should not make assumptions without knowing“.

It is rumored that Dorothea Wierer learned about the affair and didn’t take it at all well. Certainly not the best way to approach the event of the year, however to be played in front of the friendly public. It is clear that Wierer and Vittozzi were not friends, but an interview with nitroglycerin like this does nothing but increase tensions in the team for free, inevitably compromising the serenity of the group. Italy will present itself at the World Championships in Anterselva wounded by a deep internal laceration, perhaps not suturable. The hope is that the whole world of blue biathlon will not lose out.
